WoodWorks @ BuildEX spotlights mass timber’s role in faster, more sustainable construction
With strong attendance and highly engaged audiences, WoodWorks @ BuildEX continues to demonstrate the growing momentum behind mass timber and sustainable construction in BC.

For the second year running, WoodWorks BC partnered with BuildEX to deliver an expansive educational program focused on the future of sustainable construction.
In February, The WoodWorks @ BuildEX program gathered more than 40 speakers across 12 sessions to explore the role of wood in rapid, standardized, and affordable construction.
The first day hosted experts solving construction challenges, redefining ways to build quicker and more efficiently. A standout session featured the design and construction team behind the North Shore Neighbourhood House project. Delivering 179 rental units, this 18-storey mass timber building is proving mass timber as an effective construction approach for tall residential buildings.
Day one was capped with a fascinating keynote from construction team of the PNE Freedom Mobile Arch; a showcase of BC’s world-leading timber engineering expertise.

Highlights from day two included a rapid-fire session with some of the most current innovative timber projects in BC, including Spearhead’s new manufacturing facility, aimed at increasing availability and demand of hardwood species for construction.
Attendees also welcomed Chief Forester Shane Berg to the stage for an insightful presentation showcasing BC as a world leader in sustainable forestry practices.

Woodworks @ BuildEX concluded with a podcast-style keynote featuring an all-star team from Perkins&Will, Timber Engineering, and Kalesnikoff. Speakers shared an inspiring and optimistic outlook for the future of the construction industry as it transitions to standardized, sustainable, and prefab-friendly building systems.
Robert Malczyk, Principal of Timber Engineering, summarized the session, saying: “Remember, we are the powerhouse of mass timber in the world … we can do way more here in British Columbia.”
