The Whole Story

The Vancouver Giants are getting a new home.

The City of Surrey and the Surrey City Development Corporation announced an agreement in principle today to construct a state-of-the-art City Centre Arena and Cultural Event Centre in the heart of the city’s emerging downtown core. The landmark municipal development features a 10,000-seat stadium that will serve as the permanent new home of the Western Hockey League’s (WHL) Vancouver Giants, who will officially relocate from their current residency at the Langley Events Centre.

The high-profile venue carries a net estimated construction cost of $360 million, a capital allocation already integrated into Surrey’s approved 2026 municipal budget. Positioned as a direct economic catalyst to transform Surrey into a premier entertainment hub, the master-planned project is projected to generate $2.4 billion in cascading regional economic benefits over its initial decade of operation. Beyond hosting major athletic programs and WHL home games, the arena is structurally designed to double as a versatile cultural event centre capable of drawing international concert tours, massive assemblies, and conventions.

To anchor the surrounding entertainment district, the development will incorporate a premium luxury hotel, specialized corporate conference spaces, and high-density residential housing towers. The project will be constructed on a strategic five-acre land parcel located at 10355 King George Boulevard, situated directly across from Surrey City Hall and the Surrey Central SkyTrain Station. To assemble the necessary acreage, the city finalized a multi-property land swap transaction, exchanging the central site for three separate, city-owned parcels.

“When we say big things are happening in Surrey, we mean it, and a new arena of this scale is as big as it gets,” said Surrey Mayor Brenda Locke. “Bringing this arena to Surrey means jobs, investment, conference capacity, and major sports, arts and entertainment like never before. We’re already the economic powerhouse of the region, and this is another step in Surrey’s rise as a world-class city.”

The municipal government intends to fast-track detailed design reviews, paving the way for on-site construction mobilization by 2027, with full facility completion slated for 2030. Bill Aujla, President and CEO of the Surrey City Development Corporation, noted that bringing together the experienced building parties and the 10,000-seat arena will “unlock significant opportunities for the City” and form the absolute core of the new sports, culture, and entertainment district.

To secure the primary five-acre downtown site, the city will trade three separate municipal land holdings:

  • Acquired Property: 10355 King George Boulevard (The five-acre development site directly across from City Hall and Surrey Central SkyTrain Station).
  • Exchanged Parcel 1: 2750 194A Street.
  • Exchanged Parcel 2: 19165 39 Avenue.
  • Exchanged Parcel 3: 12820-12842 96 Avenue.
