Steven Paynter 2026 Finalist

Global Practice Area Leader & Principal at Gensler

Gensler

Steven is on the front lines of the housing crisis. He’s helped develop high-tech tools that enable cities like Calgary and others to rapidly determine if offices can be transformed into housing. There are thousands of people who now have homes thanks to Steven’s approach to office conversions. He was also the project lead for a prototype of the world’s tallest net-zero timber building, called PMX 35, developed with Sidewalk Labs. This concept explored how factory-produced timber buildings could reach 35 stories-a height never achieved in practice-pushing boundaries in sustainable design and offsite fabrication. Colleagues say Steven has emerged as a leading voice in adaptive reuse and building transformation, championing strategies that turn underutilized assets into vibrant, sustainable spaces. His work bridges design innovation with smart execution, influencing developers, contractors, and policymakers alike. And he does it all with a signature, deadpan wit.

What voters said

"Steven is a tremendous colleague and mentor. He has revolutionized the way we assess existing buildings which has impacted our conversions and repositioning of buildings globally."
