The Whole Story:

PCL Construction has been selected to oversee the build of Greater Sudbury’s new downtown event centre, a project city officials say will serve as a cornerstone in revitalizing the core.

The city announced Tuesday that PCL was chosen as construction manager following a request for proposals issued in June. Council voted in April 2024 to locate the new venue downtown, describing it as central to efforts to enhance Sudbury’s reputation as a place to live, work and visit.

“We are pleased to be working with PCL, whose proven expertise and strong track record in delivering high-quality public infrastructure make them a valuable partner in realizing our vision for a vibrant, connected downtown,” said Tony Cecutti, the city’s strategic projects lead.

The Edmonton-based construction firm has a long history in Canada and maintains a dedicated office in Sudbury. Its portfolio includes a wide range of public and institutional projects. For the event centre, PCL has assembled a specialized team that will oversee all aspects of construction, while the city retains final decision-making authority.

“PCL is proud to work alongside the City of Greater Sudbury to bring their vision for the new event centre to life,” said John Schmalz, the company’s area manager. “As a team with deep local roots, we are honoured to support the city’s efforts in revitalizing this integral civic landmark that will serve as a cornerstone for the continued growth of Sudbury’s downtown core.”

The facility is envisioned as a modern, multi-purpose venue capable of hosting concerts, sporting events and community gatherings. City officials say it will provide “unforgettable experiences” while also supporting economic growth.

Site preparation is expected to begin in late 2025, with construction scheduled to start in early 2026.

Separately, through a different competitive process, PCL was also awarded the contract to manage construction of the Cultural Hub at Tom Davies Square.
