Work on the early civil phase commenced on June 30, 2026. Once complete in November 2030, the expanded 97-kilometre corridor will connect Highway 643 to proposed northern all-season routes, including the Marten Falls Community Access Road, the Webequie Supply Road, and the Northern Road Link.

The project is being delivered in partnership with Aroland First Nation under a Shared Prosperity Agreement signed in January 2025. The agreement establishes joint frameworks for civil infrastructure, local energy transmission, and community development.

The infrastructure push forms part of Ontario’s broader critical minerals strategy, aimed at unlocking an estimated $22 billion in economic potential across the James Bay Lowlands.

Beyond civil earthworks, the government is framing the road network as enabling infrastructure for heavy industrial load growth, regional mining developments, and new high-voltage transmission lines.
